Mace

The Mace or Jiān (鐧) is an ancient weapon. It is also referred to as the "iron slip".

It became a popular weapon in Chinese martial arts during the Song dynasty.

The Mace is a blunt weapon, made for bashing armored opponents.

At first it looks like the Chinese Jian (劍) or double-edged sword, but a closer look reveals that it is a blunted slab of iron, with 4, 6, or 8 sides. The handle is decorative, and very much resembles the handle seen on a Jian sword, and most mace hand guards are block-shaped or disk-shaped. They were often used in a pair.

The mace may have led to later innovations in blunt weapons such as the "melon hammer" mace or Lì guā chuí (立瓜錘).

The mace also closely resembles the iron whip, or Tiě biān (鐵鞭).
